Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
In between the excitement of Captain America and Daredevil there was a new Spider-Man cartoon that was kind of part of the MCU but also kind of wasn’t.
I didn’t fully understand where it fit into everything, but it was talked about in the same vein as some of those other big projects, so I knew I was going to watch it. (Unlike, say, the ‘Spidey and His Amazing Friends’ cartoon that is aimed at a younger demographic.) (Which isn’t exactly a reason for me not to watch something that has to do with Spider-Man…but I mean, I can’t watch everything.)
This Spider-Man is different because everything you expect to happen that you know about kind of happens but there are little twists that make it different.
It’s also a very comic-booky cartoon - it is drawn and presented in a way that you might expect from a comic book come to life. (I also described it to a friend as almost like you’re watching a video game play out.)
I will tell you I have a bias that I like almost anything Spider-Man…but I thought this show was exceptional.
It’s 10 episodes and that last one is very good.
I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t get into specifics but there are references to all kinds of other MCU events, but this Spider-Man is definitely a different Spider-Man than the MCU one.
There are satisfying appearances from other characters, and future events are set up nicely.
There are supposed to be two more seasons, and they leave a lot open-ended to hook you in towards those seasons while still bringing this season to a satisfying conclusion.
Maybe someday I’ll get tired of all of the different Spider-Man stories out there. (Ooh, will this Spider-Man join the ‘Across the Multiverse’ Spider-Man cast? That's interesting.)
But it isn’t going to happen because of this show.
