Fewest Runs In The Majors
The weather being what it is in New York the next few days, there’s a chance the Mets might not play again until Friday night.
As badly as I wanted baseball to start, that would not be the worst thing for me because this team has not been much fun to watch and/or write about thus far.
If the Mets do manage to get any games in, they’ll be messy and cold and wet…not exactly conducive conditions to big offensive games.
Which is bad news for the Mets because they are not scoring at all.
(Look! I used the rainy day banner above. See, I haven’t lost my sense of humor about baseball yet.)
I know. It’s only been 4 games.
But the Mets have only managed 8 runs. That’s tied for fewest in the majors with the Chicago White Sox. The Minnesota Twins have 9, and every other team has managed double digits in runs scored.
I spent some time thinking about those 8 runs today and compared it to how some other teams have been doing.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, you might remember, scored 14 runs IN THE THIRD INNING on Opening Day against Colorado.
The Baltimore Orioles had a 9-run inning against the Angels on Saturday.
So, to be clear, two teams have scored more runs in an inning than the Mets have so far on the season.
On Saturday the Mets managed a whopping 6 runs in their 7-6 loss to Milwaukee…there have been four other times (besides the aforementioned big Orioles’ and Diamondbacks’ innings) that teams have scored at least that many runs in an inning…let alone a game.
But back to 8 runs. I took a look at 8-run games. The good news? The Mets have yet to give up 8 runs in a game. (Pitching, despite Luis Severino’s struggles on Saturday, has not been the big problem here.)
But there have already been 28 times teams have scored 8 runs in a game over the season’s first 5 days where everyone has played. (And, you can even say 7 days because the Padres and Dodgers both scored more than 8 runs in the 15-11 Padres win in Korea.)
17 different teams have already had a game in which they scored 8 runs or more. 9 teams did it more than once, led by Atlanta and Pittsburgh with 3 such games already. (We’re not far off from starting to write about the Pirates. They seem much more fun to watch and I love their ballpark too.)
And, again, the Mets have only managed 8 runs total in their 0-4 start.
Sorry to bust in here with some bad news, but if it’s going through my head (as all of these losses have been these past few days), it’s going to end up here.
The good news is it can’t get worse, right? So I look forward to sharing some good news soon when the Mets start winning.
Which can only happen if they start scoring runs.
