Three In A Row!
Mets 5, Phillies 1
(5-3)
What a good game.
The doubleheader on Tuesday was fun, but there was a little dip when the Mets gave up the lead in game one and then fell behind, before they came back and won it.
Wednesday night was good feelings all the way through.
David Peterson pitched one of the better games of his career - 10 strikeouts in six innings while just giving up one run on two hits.
Jeurys Familia wasn’t super-sharp in a third of an inning, but even the last batter he faced only hit a dribbler towards short. Control was his issue - he didn’t give up hard hits.
And it was forgettable because Aaron Loup came in and got a double play to end the 7th and get him off the hook, then pitched a really strong 8th inning.
Zack Wheeler was good for the Phillies, but the Mets managed to get 2 first inning runs, a third on a sac fly in the 7th, and then James McCann iced it with a 2-run homer in the 8th.
The bats seem to be coming alive - Brandon Nimmo, Dom Smith, and McCann each had 3 hits, Francisco Lindor had 2, and as a team the Mets had 12 (a high for the young season). Even the struggling Michael Conforto had some good contact, with a fly ball to right that made you think he’s starting to see the ball better.
It’s going to be a battle in the National League East all year long, so three wins against the Phillies now aren’t the be all-end all…but these have been three very encouraging wins in a row.
Notes: I always feel like when a guy pitches against the same team twice in a row in a short amount of time it benefits the hitters - they have an idea of what he throws and familiarity breeds comfort for the hitters. The opposite was true for Peterson facing the Phillies Wednesday, after Philadelphia knocked him around a bit last week. I think that’s a really good sign…I guess we might be approaching a waiting game once again. Thursday is a noon start, but I guess the weather in New York is not going to be good. Then the Mets go to Colorado where there will be snow. Steve Gelbs said during Wednesday’s game that the weather won’t be great in Denver, but it’s unlikely to lead to postponements. Jacob deGrom is supposed to start Thursday - so he’s either going to pitch with rain on the way (or in the rain?), or get postponed to pitch in frigid temperatures. Less than ideal either way, I’d say.
How I Watched: Wednesday nights are a little busy - I had to listen to the first three innings on the radio. The neat thing about that is the cool image I can use at the top of the page. Maybe I should spend an inning of every game in the car so I can get a picture of the matchup to have for these posts.
What Else I Watched: You know what? I didn’t watch any other baseball on Wednesday. I followed the Red Sox scores during the afternoon - it’s wild what they’ve done since their 0-3 start. (And they’re not too far out on the horizon for the Mets. I think they play at the end of the month.) But that’s it. And I have no other Notes From Around the League today either.
