Stay At Home Dad Week 29 - Rearranging Our Desks

This is where there used to be a desk in my office.

This is where there used to be a desk in my office.

(Sunday Paper, Year V, Issue 40)

It was a year ago in March that I re-did the home office.

Up until then I had been working in various places around the house - everywhere from the couch (in front of the TV) to the living room (with the dog snuggled up to me) to the kitchen table (which was probably where I was the most productive).

The room that became my office used to have a desk built into the wall taking up most of the room, so I tore that out and I got some new furniture and I got that room organized.

I wrote about it about it shortly after I did all that work, back in March of 2019.

Then, this past March, everything took a turn.

The fact that everyone started working from home had an impact on my work in terms of how I worked, not necessarily where I worked.

I still had my office space. Kathy set up in the living room at a desk we had for an old computer that the girls had never really used.

For their sporadic school meetings at the end of last year the girls didn’t have dedicated work spaces…other than the fact that our oldest generally worked in her bedroom.

But this year things are different. The girls have a much more structured school day…and we didn’t quite expend as much energy setting up home work spaces for the girls as other people did….or as we did, say, getting the backyard ready for a summer at home.

When it became clear we should have gotten at least one extra desk, we ordered one on-line for our oldest daughter - but we were too late. The delivery date kept getting pushed back because of a lack of availability. Then, last weekend, Kathy and I were in Target and we happened upon the perfect desk, which happened to be the only one in stock.

I also then remembered that a while back I had the idea that the extra desk in my office was expendable if necessary…and if this wasn’t an ‘if necessary’ situation, I don’t know what would qualify.

So I moved that desk (you, remember, the one from IKEA) upstairs for my youngest daughter to use, and now my middle daughter has upstairs or downstairs work options. (She’s flexible.)

And me? Well, the office is available for use on most days…but it’s in need of another desk solution when things normalize a little bit again.

Because everything that was on that other desk now resides in a very, very messy bookshelf.

Notes

*We had some crazy winds on Wednesday this week, and in our neighborhood we lost power for a bit, which is certainly a problem during remote learning time. But the reason I bring this up is the yard went from nice and clean to absolutely covered in branches and leaves. So fall is fully upon us here at the Sucich house.

*Changes of season are funny with the dog. Every time there’s something new on the ground it draws her interest and makes outside time drag on much longer than necessary. In the fall, it’s all the leaves that used to be on the trees. In the winter, it’s the snow. In the spring, it’s the grass popping up again…and then in summer it’s the rabbit poop. So much friggin’ rabbit poop.

*Had my first chance to watch the Jets in their nationally televised game on Thursday night. Yikes. I actually stayed up for the whole game, and the Jets made it exciting towards the end, taking the lead…only to throw it away and make it a frustrating night. That’s what it’s like being a Jets fan.

*My Rays advanced to the Division Series. I don’t really find myself interested in any of the other teams. Maybe the A’s, just to see a different team advance? Don’t have any need to see the Astros do any more winning. I also find myself intrigued by the Marlins. But their success would seem like too much of a slap in the face to the Mets.
