Daisy Jones & The Six

Kathy read this book a few years ago, and then on one of my recent flights I saw somebody on the plane reading it - maybe it was when I went to Chicago in October.

So it’s been in the back of my mind as a ‘Maybe I should read that book’ book…and then after I finished The Keep I saw it in my daughter’s room and figured now was the time.

The first thing that surprised me about Daisy Jones & the Six was that it - a fiction book - is told in oral history format. I thought that was very clever right off the bat. Great storytelling device for this type of book.

It also made it easy to read - small chunks of words, but I didn’t want to go too fast because I was really enjoying the story.

It seems predictable - 1970s band, there are going to be drugs and rock and roll and conflicts, and all of these things happen - but it’s not how you would expect it to unfold.

I thought it was a really good book, and there were surprises that I thought I saw coming that I was wrong about and other surprises that I didn’t see coming at all that were fun little reveals. And I got unexpectedly emotional towards the end. I guess that’s a good sign that it’s well written. So nice work Taylor Jenkins Reid.

In the acknowledgements, the author wrote about how much she loves Stevie Nicks and when I talked to a friend about the book she clearly identified the parallels to Fleetwood Mac…I had not made those connections while reading, so clearly I don’t know a lot about Fleetwood Mac.

(Also, I guess this is as good a place as any to add that Kathy told me she did not read this book. I could have sworn she had. [And this is not a ‘Wicked’ memory issue. She legit hasn’t read this.] She did say she wants to read it.)

Daisy Jones & the Six definitely lends itself to a movie or a TV series…and Amazon did make a series, as you can see mentioned on the cover of our copy of the book.

So we’ll see - that might be a TV series I’ll be watching before 2025 is over.
