Spending A Couple of Days Like A College Student
No decisions have been made yet, but this is certainly a feather in South Carolina’s cap.
We weren’t exactly planning on going down to South Carolina for one last college visit.
We had been to campus a couple of summers ago - July of 2022, to be exact - and had a pretty good feel for the school.
But when it came down to decision time, we figured a visit while students were in the thick of things (albeit the last days of the semester) would be worth our while.
So we - pretty recently - booked our flights and got down on Tuesday and spent pretty much all day Wednesday and Thursday walking around campus, popping into a dining hall, spending time in the student union and the library, and attending classes. (And I went to a presentation and Q and A with a speaker.)
All of it painted a pretty good picture of what campus life is like.
It’s very different today than when I was in college more than 25 years ago.
There are still surprising similarities - the campus routines are not all that different - you get a sense of the rhythms of the campus as students move from class to class.
Especially when you spend as much time at the central student gathering spot as I spent those two days.
But the differences are stark - and almost made me jealous.
Now, I’m not jealous of all of this - I think I’m in a pretty good place right now and wouldn’t necessarily choose to relive my college years. So a couple of days was fine - I don’t need to go through the entire experience again.
But the one thing that stood out was the food.
The campus dining room was night and day to what I experienced…and I didn’t have it half bad.
I never really complained about the dorm food, and I very much liked the fast food options we had in our student union.
But the campus dining rooms we saw last week were like mall food courts within a residence hall. It was pretty incredible.
Also incredible - the little robotic cars that deliver food all over campus.
And everything is connected to GrubHub, so you can have your orders waiting for you when you’re ready to pick them up.
We didn’t get all that adventurous with our food choices, but in the time we spent on campus I had some Starbucks, Panera, Qdoba, and a sip of a smoothie.
It’s a good thing we did so much walking during our self-guided and other tours around the campus.
Because my biggest takeaway is that I would have a hard time battling the ‘freshman fifteen’ if I were a student today.
