Field of Dreams Whiskey
The company where Kathy works does a lot of business in the beverage alcohol field, so occasionally she goes to big conventions where all of the major brands go to mingle and hand out samples or trot out new drinks or whatever they do. (I don’t know. I don’t go to them.)
The last one she was at in February had a booth for Field of Dreams Whiskey, which I had told her about.
It’s whiskey made using corn from the cornfield on the site where they filmed Field of Dreams.
They release the whiskey in limited editions and I had heard about it last year, told her about it, but by the time we tried to order it the edition was sold out.
So, remembering that, she went to the booth and chatted with the guys there and she told them how her husband was a big baseball fan and they gave her some stickers and an autographed bar thing. (Hm. What do you call that. It’s the little rubber padding thing that's under the taps. I’m actually not going to look it up for this writing - I’ll let you see if you can figure out what I’m talking about - but I will look it up at some point. I’ll just leave the picture so you know what I’m talking about and you can think about whether you know what it’s called or if you’d know how to describe it.)
Kathy was excited to share all of this with me when she returned and she struggled to read the autographed names. I knew immediately who they were - Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard, and Jerry Blevins - all three former Major League relievers who started this business along with whatever else they do.
Kathy spent most of her time talking with Storen, and I told her Blevins was the one with the Mets connections. (This was on me. I have learned what is interesting to Kathy and what is not worth telling her and at no point did I think she’d ever be interested in knowing that Jerry Blevins was the name of the guy who sometimes did Mets pre- and post-game stuff, so there was no way she would have known who Jerry Blevins was ahead of this meeting.)
Anyway, then the time came for Field of Dreams Whiskey to go on sale and I poked around to see if we’d have any luck and they didn’t even ship to Massachusetts, so I forgot about it.
And then on Opening Day Kathy texted me that she had successfully ordered a bottle.
She had it shipped to my parents’ in New York.
And last weekend she was in New York for the day and popped over to my parents’ and picked it up.
So we tried it out last week.
I wish I could tell you about whiskey. I think this is one of the better whiskeys I’ve had. I don’t know. It was kind of thick? Maybe? Is that a term to describe whiskeys? I wish I could tell you it was smoky or oaky or something but I don’t know.
I did like it.
I could see myself sipping it on a summer night.
But I don’t enjoy drinking alcohol the way I used to, and I don’t think my body loves it anymore either.
So who knows if I’ll get more. But if you like whiskey, I would say you’d probably love this.
The last cool thing about this - the release is part of their ‘player series’ - every bottle comes with a number that corresponds to a Major League Baseball player. You can read more about the whole deal on their website. We had bottle #5330, meaning our player was Kiki Cuyler.
