Daredevil: Born Again
I honestly have no idea how I know about Daredevil.
We weren’t huge comic book readers, me and my brother, when we were young.
But we had occasional spurts of Spider-Man comics, mostly. I read Disney comics more than anything else, but that’s irrelevant here.
I suppose it’s possible Daredevil made enough appearances in the Spider-Man comics we had that we could have known about him, but the point is: I am very familiar with the overall story of Daredevil.
I didn’t know the secondary details - his friends and family part of his backstory - but I definitely knew Matt Murdock, the blindness, the heightened senses, the weapon.
It’s possible maybe that knowledge was just from these Marvel cards we collected, which I took a picture of above. I came across these recently and distinctly remember this Daredevil card.
Regardless. Last year (and maybe the year before that?) I finally watched the Daredevil series that aired on Netflix almost a decade ago.
I had wanted to see it because I like Daredevil a lot. But I started it once and didn’t continue because it was dark and very violent.
But when I rewatched it I soldiered through all of that and watched all 3 seasons.
It was good. I did not realize, though, that Matt Murdock was such a tortured soul.
In February I took a picture with this Daredevil billboard not far from the Hell’s Kitchen streets he prowls.
So I had a better idea what to expect with the new Daredevil series on Disney+ that started last month and ended last week.
It was as dark and violent and Matt Murdock is as tortured as you’d expect.
I enjoyed it, though I wish it was more super-hero-ish and less serial drama-ish.
The fifth episode, featuring a bank holdup on Saint Patrick’s Day, was the best one in my opinion.
And the season as a whole was good - there were a lot of little cameos and such that tied it into the larger Marvel universe, the lack of which was one of the disappointing things about the other series.
The (extremely violent) final episode ended in a place I wasn’t really expecting…but it definitely set up the second season, so we have a good idea what to expect there.
And I suspect before then we’ll see Matt Murdock and Daredevil show up in some bigger Marvel projects on the big screen, and I’m looking forward to that.
