Happy Opening Day!
Ignore the date on my picture. This is the best pic I had for this post.
Today is pretty much a holiday for me.
In previous years I might have been a little upset at the games starting at 3pm today - I would have been itching to watch something at 1pm - but today the baseball gods have smiled upon me and I will be able to watch a lot of baseball after I get home from work.
That includes the Mets, who don’t start until 4pm.
For me these past several years, as my football interest has waned, everything about November through March is about getting to this day, when baseball is back on almost every day until October. (The All Star break is a little rough for me.)
I often compare it to breathing good air - baseball comes back and I feel like I’m breathing again and I didn’t know I wasn’t breathing for a spell, if that makes sense.
It’s an important part of my life.
That may sound silly, but it’s true.
It’s what I do. I watch baseball. I think about baseball. I write (sometimes. Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with all baseball all the time here in 2025.) about baseball. I just love baseball.
My default rhythm is getting through the day to watch baseball at night.
It’s my favorite kind of routine.
All of the TV shows and movies I watch - most of that happens in the winter to fill the gaps in time when I would be watching baseball.
So today is a great day.
Baseball is back. The stats all start counting.
Rare are the moments when I sit at home in the evening and don’t have a game to watch.
I don’t love January 1st. I don’t celebrate New Year’s Day very much. I’ve never quite thought of it in these terms, but maybe perhaps this is why:
The New Year really begins today.
